IML Happenings

New Look and Focus - IndieMusicLounge.Com is undergoing a great shift and construction.  Many of the topics have been cleared out to give you more of the stuff you want.  We've limited the sections down to what was most frequently used.  This leaves the articles section, I-Rawk Fashions, IML Forums, this newsletter and its archives, spotlight artists, and IMLTV.

IndieMusicLounge.Com starting this month of March will be solely focused toward female independent musicians.  This means all spotlight artists from that time on will be female artists and more niche marketed items will soon be added to IML.

Q&A With Dan Parilis

Q: Can a "bad" singer be taught to sing well...?

"i have a horrible voice...and cant sing, but when i write songs id like to be able to...is it possible to get a good voice out of someone that really cant sing at all? thanks"
- - - - - - - - - - - - -

A: This is probably the question I hear more than any other.   Can a person without a natural ability to sing be taught how to do so?

There are two major technical aspects to singing:  the ability to accurately reproduce the pitches that we hear in our mind's ear, and the body's actual physical production of the vocal tone...

                     ...first the physical part:

Singing is an athletic activity.  We learn to develop certain muscles and use them in concert, with as little extraneous effort as possible, to create an act of physical excellence.   Like any athletic activity, some people are more naturally inclined than others.  But a person who can't naturally hit a baseball, or get a basketball into a hoop, can learn to do so with proper instruction and a little dedication.  The same goes for martial arts, running track, or playing golf.   With the development of muscle memory, the control and accuracy comes.  The voice isn't any different.

                     Now, the matching of pitch:

This is a little more involved.  A singer must be able to hear a note clearly in their MIND'S EAR, and then be able to REPRODUCE that note so it comes out of their mouth correctly.  A similar connection is used, I think, when an artist sees an image in his/her MIND'S EYE, and can reproduce that image on paper or canvas.  Many people believe these are abilities you are either BORN with, or NOT.   While I agree that some people are born with an immediate natural proficiency (like athletic talent), I also believe that if an opened minded person works with someone who knows how to teach what they're trying to learn, many times they can get pretty damned good at the very thing they thought they had no affinity for in the first place.   It's all about the development of neuro-pathways; one part of the brain learns to talk to the other, thus gaining the ability to coordinate certain muscles and senses to create a physical result.   No one is born with the ability to ride a bike, for example, but with practice, we learn to coordinate certain muscles in concert and to govern them by sense of feel to create a physical result that would otherwise be impossible.

There is no straight black and white answer to this question.   I've worked with lots of people over the years who've said they were hopeless and had TERRIBLE voices.   Most of the time their voices were not nearly as bad as they thought.  My answer is that most *anyone* can improve their voices with due diligence, and the right methods of training themselves, just like any other learned skill.  And although this answer is lengthy, the methods are really pretty simple.  There are plenty of ear training techniques that can really work wonders, you just need to learn how to practice them, and do exactly that.

Long answer to a short question!   Hope that helps.  (-:
